RuPaul's Drag Race Season 9

It’s here. It is finally here. The worlds greatest reality show has returned to our screens. Yes, RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9 is back and my body is ready. Following on from the absolutely stellar 2nd season of Allstars, season 9 has A LOT to live up to. With 14 brand new Queens and a killer line up of guest judges, it certainly looks like season 9 is going to slay. So you know what this means? It’s time for my annual ‘Meet The Queens’ blog. Shall we take a peak?

Nina Bo’Nina Brown

RuPaul's Drag Race - Nina Bo'Nina Brown

It’s always difficult to pick out the best Queens after one episode but Nina Bonina Brown was the stand out for me in the first episode. Her entry look was stunning and her Georgia Peaches runway look was incredible! How on Earth she managed to pull that look off so well in so little time is incredible. She also seems very humble which I like. She’s certainly one to watch.

Shea Couleé

RuPaul's Drag Race - Shea Couleé

I had trouble remembering who Shea Couleé was at first. Her Chicago runway look was good but I don’t know if I enjoyed it more for the hilarious puns coming from the judges. She was quite quiet throughout the episode so I didn’t really connect with her, not yet anyway. I see potential.

RuPaul's Drag Race - Valentina

Valentina is a gorgeous drag queen but I found myself disliking her quite quickly. I get this vibe from her that she will be a bitch when threatened and that she thinks she is better than she actually is? That’s just the vibe I got from the first episode so I could be wrong. Her runway looks were strong.

Sasha Velour

RuPaul's Drag Race - Sasha Velour

I’m confused by Sasha because I’m getting both ‘early exit’ and ‘top 5’ vibes at the same time. I didn’t like her entry and first runway look. They weren’t bad, it’s just not a style of drag that I like. But her Gaga look was brilliant and she really dedicated herself to the role. I couldn’t believe it was Sasha as it was so different. So at the moment, I’m on the fence with Sasha.

Kimora Blac

RuPaul's Drag Race - Kimora Blac

If Kimora is just going to give us nothing but fishy looks then she’ll be out early just like Gia Gunn. I don’t know, I got a bit of a weird vibe from Kimora. I think she’s holding back. I’m hoping she’ll show us different sides to her as the season progresses.

Alexis Michelle

RuPaul's Drag Race - Alexis Michelle

Alexis certainly knows how to paint her face because she is gorgeous. I liked her entry look, it was simple but stunning. Her New York runway look was a bit of a mess and the judges were totally right in their critiques of it. But her Gaga look was gorgeous, I was living for that one. She seems middle of the pack to me but there is something about her that I really like.

Farrah Moan

RuPaul's Drag Race - Farrah Moan

I was presently surprised by Farrah. Usually, the fishy Queens are the ones that are super bitchy and insecure but Farrah was very friendly and showed great companionship with her fellow Queens. I wasn’t wowed by her runway looks but they were still pretty good. I am excited to see more of what Farrah brings to the table. I think she could be the dark horse of the season.

RuPaul's Drag Race - Peppermint

Peppermint seems really nice and friendly but I spent most of the time perplexed at her wig line. It was like smudges or something along her forehead and my eyes were drawn to it every time. I thought it was just a bad wig in her entry look but then it happened again on the runway. I’m hoping she will fix this as the season progresses. Could this be the new ‘Bitch, look how fucking orange you look!’

RuPaul's Drag Race - Aja

Of all the queens, I was feeling Aja the least. I thought her make up was a bit of a mess but I’m not sure if that’s part of the appeal. I thought her New York look was really uninspired and I didn’t really get the Gaga one, the makeup didn’t really go with the dress. I’m getting early exit vibes here but I’m happy to be proved wrong.

Jaymes Mansfield

RuPaul's Drag Race - Jaymes Mansfield

I just want to pick her up and give her a big squeeze. Jaymes is as cute as a button, totally adorable but already seems out of her depth. I thought it was clear from the get go that she was really uncomfortable and shy meaning that we weren’t seeing the real her. She’s quirky and we all love a quirky queen, she just needs to find the confidence to show us her talent. I’m hoping she comes out of her shell as I think she could be really entertaining.

Charlie Hides

RuPaul's Drag Race - Charlie Hides

Okay, so I’ve heard a lot about Charlie before the show since she’s a London Queen. A lot of what I’ve heard was negative but I thought she seemed warm and friendly and her drag aesthetic is really good. I didn’t like her Boston runway look but her Gaga look was STUNNING. She should have been in the top 3 for that. I’m excited to see more of what Charlie has to offer.

Trinity Taylor

RuPaul's Drag Race - Trinity Taylor

I’m not really sure what to make of Trinity yet. I don’t feel like I got to see enough of her personality. I liked her workroom entry look but wasn’t feeling either of her runway looks. Her Gaga one was in the right direction but it was too simple. Although there is a rivalry between her and Eureka so that will be interesting to watch.

Eureka O’Hara

RuPaul's Drag Race - Eureka

Just no. Literally five minutes into the season and she was already being a shady queen. It’s clear from the get go that she’s the drag sister to Phi Phi O’Hara – the original Mean Girl. I get major bitchy because I’m insecure vibes from Eureka but if she can get past that then there is a talented Queen there. Her Tennessee runway look was good, reminded me very much of Ginger Minj. It’s just the attitude that I think is going to be a problem.

The 14th Queen

A fourteenth queen entered the competition at the end of the episode. But who is it? Is it a queen from season 8 or from one of the earlier seasons? My money is Cynthia Lee Fontaine from season 8 returning.

And there we have it. I’m definitely excited by this crop of queens, there is a great mix of talent and personalities which really shows the diversity of the drag community. Who are your early favourites? Let me know in the comments below.
