The finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race Allstars may still be fresh in our minds but there’s no time to dwell on the past. Season 10 of the hit US show has already begun with a brand new set of queens. 14 brand new queens are battling it out to be named ‘America’s Next Drag Superstar’. And now that a couple of episodes have passed, I thought I’d share my thoughts on this seasons queens. Grab a cocktail, glue down your wigs and prepare for my countdown of this years contestants.
As always, I try to avoid seeing anything of the queens before their Drag Race debut. But I had actually heard of Aquaria before on social media. There’s a lot of buzz around her so my expectations were set quite high. But this buzz has actually been a hindrance to her because I’ve been a little underwhelmed. Not so much with her drag – I think her runway looks have all been fantastic, in particular the feathers look. It’s more of how she is coming across which is making me dislike her. She comes across as cold, unfriendly and bratty. But you know what – so did Violet Chachki and she ended up winning season 7. I’m sure a redemption for Aquaria is coming as I do see her making the top 4 at the moment.
I find myself in a very peculiar situation when it comes to Asia O’Hara. While I like what I’ve seen so far, there’s something missing for me. I can’t put my finger on what this is but I forget about her. If you were to ask me to name the queens of season 10, she’d be at the last of the list as I’d struggle to remember her. Which is weird because I’ve liked her runways a lot. Her performance in the 3rd episode main challenge was funny. I just don’t know what it is that’s missing for me. Maybe it will come as the season progresses. She is going to be around for a while.
Blair St Clair
When I saw the promo pictures for this season of Drag Race, I fully expected Blair St Claire to be the first queen out. Her promo shot just screamed early exit. Just goes to the show how awful those promo pictures are because Blair has been great so far! In the challenges, she has been very much in the middle for me but I get the feeling that she’s just starting to rev the engine in that department. Where Blair has really wowed me has been on the runway. She is GORGEOUS! There’s this elegance about her which just exudes from her when she’s on that runway. I just hope she can apply that to the challenges so she sticks around.
Dusty Ray Bottoms
Based on the promo looks, I fully expected to hate Dusty Ray Bottoms. I wasn’t a fan of her signature dots look at all. But you know what? When she softens it down a bit, I actually quite like it. It is unique and makes her stand out. Where I lose Dusty is in her runway looks. Her runway look for the ‘best drag’ theme was stunning! That black and white jacket with the ripped tights – so bloody gorgeous! But she then followed it up in week 3 with that god awful costume that looked like a bad Poison Ivy cosplay. I’m hoping that this was a one-off misfire cause if she walks that runway again in anything remotely as horrible as that outfit then I’ll need to hand my stan card back in.
I really felt for Eureka when she had to leave season 9 due to her injury. I thought she had the potential to go far and I very much enjoyed her runway looks. But in season 10, it feels like a different Eureka. Her performance in the second episode maxi challenge was bad. Really, really bad. Cynthia Lee Fontaine bad. And her ‘best drag’ runway? Everything she showed us in season 9 was a lot better. It’s like her drag has regressed. I don’t think she fits in with the cast of season 10 at all. She would have been better not returning and then asking for a slot in an Allstars season at some point.
When it comes to Kameron Michaels, the first thing I want to mention is how hot she is out of drag. What. A. Babe. I have serious body envy. Good then that she is starting fitness and health tips on her Instagram and social accounts. In drag, she’s gorgeous but I think she is going to struggle to stand out in this particularly strong season. There’s a lot of big personalities and she is more polite and reserved. That’s no bad thing, I actually like that a lot about her but I think it means that she fades into the background a little bit. Her last 2 runways were gorgeous, I particularly loved the butterfly one. I just need need her to stand out a little more so we don’t lose her early.
My husband tells me that I once had an argument with Mayhem on Twitter after I made a comment about her make-up. I don’t remember this at all but if true, I’m sorry Mayhem for being mean. It’s super embarrassing because so far, Mayhem’s makeup has been flawless. She’s super gorgeous! I absolutely loved her first runway look for the ‘drag on a dime’ theme. It was really chic! My only issue at the moment with Mayhem is this narrative of her applying to be on the show so much. It makes her come across as desperate a little bit which I think devalues her talent. She doesn’t need to Drag Race to validate her talent, she is a talented queen and I’m looking forward to seeing more from her as the season progresses.
We may only be a couple of weeks in but Miz Cracker is currently my favourite. She stood out for me the moment she entered the workroom. She ticks all the boxes for me – she’s gorgeous, great costumes and is really witty and funny. I loved her ‘drag on a dime’ look in the first episode. I was really impressed that she made that from hats and a shower curtain. While she is my favourite, I do feel that she’s been in the background a little bit after the first episode. I reckon she’ll start to come to the front more when we reach Snatch Game where she’s bound to kill it.
Monét X Change
Monét X Change is a funny one for me to have an opinion on because while I very much like her, I haven’t been that impressed with her performance thus far. Her runway look in episode 1 – the sponge outfit was awful. It looked like a oversized onesie with sponges just glued on it. Even worse that she thought she should have been in the top with that one. Where Monét wins me over is with her personality – she’s witty and I like that. She’s great in the confessionals. It’s just the runway looks that are killing it for me at the moment. Aside from the dreadful sponge dress, everything else has just been meh.
My opinion on Monique Heart has completed changed several times over the space of only a handful of episodes. When she entered the workroom, I was instantly drawn to her. She was beautiful, full of personality and seemed nice. But seeing her furious that she wasn’t in the top in the first episode made me dislike her. It seemed like cockiness. But then after seeing her in Untucked, I realised that it’s not cockiness at all, it’s an eagerness to be the best that she can be. And that should always be applauded. And to be fair to Monique, her runway looks are pretty good – I loved her cookie monster look. Very cool!
The Vixen is a funny contestant to comment on because I don’t think we’re seeing the real Vixen. From her workroom entrance ‘I came here to fight’ to her drama with Aquaria, I feel like she’s come in with the aim to cause drama. I think she is absolutely a fiery person but it doesn’t seem genuine that she goes 100 on someone if they say something she doesn’t like. That being said, I totally agreed with her on Untucked on how she will be portrayed as an ‘angry black woman’ with the Aquaria drama. I guess having a fiery personality has worked for her though because I haven’t really liked much of what she’s offered on the runway or in the challenges so far.
I feel like we lost Yuhua Hamasaki too early without really getting to see her potential. She’s clearly a talented queen with the ability to make stunning outfits for herself and other queens. I just don’t think the challenges really worked in her favour. She did give me one of my favourite looks of the season so far with her yellow caution tape dress in episode 1. Loved that! It was very fashion. Hopefully we will have a queen return later on in the season because I’d like to see more of Yuhua. When is she coming to Glasgow for a gig?
Kalorie Karbdashian Williams
Poor Kalorie Karbdashian Williams. I liked her a lot but she really was out of her depth in this season. Any other season, I think she could have made more of an impact but she was swallowed up by her competitors. She had a really great personality and aside from her not so great runway look in episode 1, I liked her drag. It’s just unfortunate that she never stood out more as she was very likeable. A queen I’d like to see more of in the future for sure.
Vanessa Vanjie Mateo
Has there ever been a queen that goes first that has been this iconic? Miss Vanjie! Miss Vanjie! Miss Vanjieeeee! That exit was absolutely amazing and you mention Drag Race to anyone at the moment and all you get is Miss Vanjie! As much as I like Kalorie, I do think the judges should have kept Vanessa over her. I think she had more to offer. And I didn’t even think Vanessa’s runway look was bad that it warranted her in the bottom 2. It should have been Monét in the bottom for sure. Regardless, Vanessa has left Drag Race with an iconic moment that will sit alongside the great one-liners this show has given us. I fully expect to see Vanessa again in Drag Race in future.
Coming into season 10, I was concerned about Drag Race fatigue with it coming straight after Allstars 3. But this crop of contestants are honestly all great in their own way and I’ve watched every episode at least 3 times already. What are your thoughts on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 10? Who is your favourite? Let me know in the comments and on social media too! As always, thanks for reading and don’t forget to subscribe!
