When Disney purchased Lucasfilm back in 2012, it was never in any doubt that Disney would be making more than just new Saga movies. We’ve already had Rogue One which is easily one of the best Star Wars movies to date. We know that Han Solo is getting his own movie in 2018 before episode IX closes another trilogy. But what about beyond Episode IX and 2019? Rumours have been swirling for a while now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie was on the cards and the latest rumours certainly point to this theory becoming reality. But what sort of story could or should they tell with one of the franchises most iconic characters? Here are my picks for what I’d like to see in a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie.
01. Padawan Kenobi
As it currently stands, ‘The Phantom Menace’ is the first entry in the Star Wars universe but there is tons of lore that could be explored before that. The Jedi were at the height of their power and Obi-Wan was being trained by Qui-Gon Jinn. Casting a new relatively unknown character as a young teenage Obi-Wan as he trains to become a Jedi could be interesting. The only issue would be the casting of Qui-Gon Jinn. It’s been eighteen years since Episode 1 so Liam Neeson obviously looks older when he should be looking younger. Kenobi does mention several times in the original trilogy about Yoda training him so maybe it could be set before he is assigned as Palawan to Qui-Gon Jinn?
02. The Clone Wars
The one thing that really frustrated me about the prequel movies was that they never properly covered The Clone Wars. Episode 2 is the star of the war with Episode 3 covering the end. What about in-between? Yes, we had The Clone Wars cartoon which is really good but nothing beats a live-action movie does it? Ewan McGregor still looks great so could easily slip into the role again. Just grow the facial hair again and you wouldn’t know it’s been twelve years. A story of Obi-Wan on a mission for the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars? Maybe we could finally see Asajj Ventress on the big screen as the villain? That’d be awesome.
03. Old Hermit Kenobi
We all know that after the destruction of the Jedi Order, Obi-Wan Kenobi goes into hiding on Tattoine to watch over Luke Skywalker. But surely he’s not just sitting on his backside for the next seventeen years right? It’s been twelve years since we last saw McGregor playing Kenobi so he’s the right age to play an older Kenobi. They touched on this briefly in the animated series Rebels when Darth Maul lures Kenobi out of hiding to protect Luke. I’m sure the creators of that show would have loved to have used Kenobi more on their show but I reckon they were only allowed to use him sparingly so that it didn’t mess up with any potential Old Hermit Kenobi movie plans.
04. A Stand Alone Jedi Story
In the Star Wars Universe, much of the expanded material is set between specific movies with them specifically tied to the events of the Saga movies. How about a simple stand-alone story where the Jedi Order send Obi-Wan Kenobi on a mission. A single movie story that can be told over 2 hours? Setting it between Episodes 1 and 2 would be perfect as there is a 10 year gap between those movies so there’s no need to tie it directly into the main saga. Full freedom to do whatever you like! Sounds perfect. As long as there is no young Anakin Skywalker of course – once was bad enough.
05. The Kenobi Jar Jar Adventure
Just hear me out okay – Obi-Wan is sitting in his little hut on Tattoine and realises that Jar Jar Binks is to blame for the Emperor rising to power. Jar Jar did stupidly give the Emperor the powers he needed to begin the war and his plan to destroy the Jedi. With this knowledge, Obi-Wan searches the galaxy for the gungan and does what we have all wanted to do since 1999 – KILL JAR JAR BINKS. He won’t turn to the Dark Side cause Jar Jar totally deserves it.
While the rumours around an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie are still strictly rumours, it’s pretty obvious that it’s going to happen at some point. If it does, what sort of story do you want to see told? Let me know in the comments below and as always, thanks for reading.
