Girl Power! My Favourite Spice Girls Tracks

Who would have thought that 2018 would be the best year yet for pop comebacks! 2017 may have given us Steps back but 2018 is bringing us not only the return of Britney Spears to UK shores but the return of the Spice Girls! Yes that’s right, the famous five and undoubtedly the biggest girl group in the world are reuniting in 2018. For what exactly, we do not yet know but a tour is incredibly likely. To celebrate the return of Baby, Sporty, Ginger, Posh and Scary, I thought I’d count down my favourite Spice Girls tracks. So you better come with me and zigazig ah!

I’ll tell you want what I really, really want – to see the Spice Girls live! Who doesn’t remember the first time they heard this song? 1996, I was 11 years old and I remember sitting in my parents living room watching the Spice Girls bounce about on the Top of the Pops stage. I was instantly drawn to Baby Spice, cause obviously. The track itself grabbed me right away with it’s incredible energy and sass. Also, who doesn’t know that amazing rap in the middle eight. V doesn’t come for free you know.

Say You’ll Be There

When I was a kid, I wanted Baby Spice’s blue gloves from this music video SO much. If I had ever gotten them, I don’t think I would have ever taken them off. ‘Say You’ll Be There’ is probably THE ultimate pop song in the Spice discography. While ‘Wannabe’ is the more iconic track, Say You’ll Be There became the blueprint on how to not only write a fantastic pop song, but how to solidify yourselves as more than a one hit wonder. This is when the Spice Girls really became the pop force that we know and love.

2 Become 1

The 3rd single from their debut album ‘Spice’, ‘2 Become 1’ was the Spice Girls first ballad and first Christmas number 1. And also a bit of a LGBT anthem with the girls changing the lyrics so it didn’t exclude their LGBT fans as well as promoting safe sex. What queens! I absolutely loved the video for this song, it was so festive. My favourite part of the song is actually the final 30 seconds or so with the strings.

Spice Up Your Life

The lead single from their second album ‘Spice World’, they had a lot to live up to and they absolutely delivered with ‘Spice Up Your Life’. I liked that they mostly sang the song all together in the verses, only giving us solo lines in the middle eight. It’s the bridge that it’s the standout for me. Colours of the world! SPICE UP YOUR LIFE.

The only Spice Girls single to not hit number 1 (until Headlines but let’s pretend that never happened). I loved every song on the Spice World album but ‘Stop’ was undoubtedly my favourite. I loved that it was a really uplifting pop track. It’s a bit lighter than their other singles which makes it feel quite unique in their catalogue of hits. It’s also IMPOSSIBLE to not do the dance routine when the chorus kicks in. I’m doing it right now as I write this.

The Spice Girls may not have had that many singles before they called it a day but there isn’t a dud in their practically flawless discography. Are you excited for the Spice Girls comeback? What are your favourite Spice tracks? Let me know in the comments below or via Twitter.
