Here we are – the final blog post of 2017. And what better way to say goodbye to another year on Liam’s Life with a countdown of my favourite movies of 2017? To be honest, I haven’t seen that many new movies at the cinema this year. I just didn’t have the time to go as much as I wanted to. Maybe in 2018, I will finally get one of those unlimited cards? Anyway, here’s my blog on my favourite movies of 2017. Happy New Year when it comes!
Probably the surprise of the year for me. I’m not a fan of the DC films at all – Man of Steel and Suicide Squad are just okay while Dawn of Justice is absolutely awful. Amazing to think that it finally took Wonder Woman, a movie in development for decades to finally give us the movie they needed. It’s got a fantastic story, great actors with wonderful chemistry and a heart at it’s very core. It does suffer from too much CG in it’s final act but that seems to be the thing in all DC films. You can read my full review of Wonder Woman right here.
It felt like there was an eternity between Thor 2and this new instalment. As I mentioned in my review of Thor:Ragnarok back when it was released in November, I wasn’t expecting much after the disappointing ‘The Dark World’. And while I left the cinema feeling a little frustrated, I did enjoy it immensely. It’s a great film with a charismatic cast and strong story. I loved Cate Blanchett as Hell and liked the introduction of Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie too.
I can remember when I heard the announcement of Spiderman being rebooted in order to join the Marcel Cinematic Universe and thinking – ANOTHER reboot?! At least it wasn’t another origins story! In the end, Homecoming is actually miles better than the two ‘Amazing Spiderman’ movies and than ‘Spiderman 3’. Tom Holland is fantastic as the webbed crusader and honestly, I loved the dynamics between all the younger characters. Plus it was great to finally see Vulture as not only a villain, but a villain with backstory and purpose. More of this please.
Sometimes there is nothing better than a dumb action movie to watch one afternoon. Power Rangers is that film. I saw with with my husband at the cinema in Toronto one afternoon when we had run out of things to do. And it was great! Yes the acting is a bit dodgy, yes the storyline isn’t the best but the cast are incredibly likeable and sometimes you just need a bit of cheesy fun right? It’s a shame it flopped at the box office.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
As I write this, I have now seen The Last Jedi twice and have booked for a 3rd time just before Christmas. There was never any question that I wouldn’t love this movie – it is Star Wars after all. Obviously, I’m not going to give anything away as I’m not evil but I will say that this is a refreshing take on Star Wars. The Empire Strikes Back 2.0 this is not.
A last minute addition to this blog as it’s only just been released. My friend and I went to see this early one morning after seeing the trailer before The Last Jedi. Let’s just put it out there – this film is not a patch on the original. But it also doesn’t even try to replicate it either. Starring The Rock, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillian and Nick Jonas, you couldn’t get a better cast for a movie like this. It’s fun and light cinema viewing with plenty of laughs.
This was actually quite a tough list to compile as there are a lot of movies I haven’t actually seen yet (Pitch Perfect, Jumanji, Justice League). What are your favourite movies of 2017? Let me know in the comments below!
