Avengers Assemble! My Top 5 Marvel Movies!

Can you believe that it’s almost time for us to FINALLY see Avengers – Infinity War? It feels like we have been waiting for this movie for a very long and to be fair, we have. 10 years, 18 films and only now are we finally getting to see Thanos in action. In preparation for what is bound to be the biggest movie of the year, I decided to re-watch all the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But which movies are the crowning glory of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Here are my picks for the Top 5 Marvel Movies.

5. Captain America: Civil War

The last film in the Captain America trilogy, ‘Civil War’ sees Captain America face off against Iron Man in order to save his friend Bucky. What I love most about this movie is how it manages to include so many characters – old and new but none of them feel wasted. Not an easy task at all. A lot of ground work is laid down too such as the blossoming relationship between Scarlet Witch and Vision as well as the introductions of Spiderman and Black Panther into the MCU. But ultimately, it’s the main storyline of Tony Stark/Steve Rogers deteriorating relationship that is the main draw. Both Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans give their best performances as things go from bad to worse for our two favourite heroes. The stakes feel incredibly high and with real repercussions which isn’t common in a lot of superhero movies.

4. Guardians of the Galaxy

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was the film that the MCU was here to stay. If they could successfully make a movie about a talking raccoon then what can’t they do? I had never heard of the Guardians before but it was such a breath of fresh air at the time. It has a much lighter tone than other movies in the MCU focusing on witty banter all wrapped up in a nice intergalactic setting. Chris Pratt is fantastic as Peter Quill, the charismatic leader of the Guardians. Sure, it’s a CGI fest but all of it is absolutely flawless. This movie also includes one of my favourite villains in the MCU – Ronan The Accuser. He wasn’t a particularly fleshed out villain but I felt we knew enough about him to enjoy him and his evil plot. Can’t wait to see more of him in the Captain Marvel movie.

3. Thor: Ragnarok

Thor was probably the most difficult character to get right in terms of his own solo movies. But they eventually struck right with the 3rd movie ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. Taking inspiration from the Guardians film, Thor Ragnarok is the most fun, most stunning and exciting movie to watch of any of the Thor films. The comedy moments are hilarious and don’t feel forced like they did in previous movies and the intergalactic setting just fits so perfectly. Cate Blanchett is fantastic as the villainous Hela and I enjoyed Tessa Thompson a lot as Valkyrie. Ragnarok also has a lot of replay value which isn’t that common in other MCU movies.

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Of all the solo movies, ‘The Winter Solider’ is without a doubt the standout. Why? Because of Chris Evans of course! He is the perfect fit for the character, a soldier out of time. We also have Scarlett Johansson back as Black Widow and despite the awful wig, she’s pretty awesome in this film. But it’s ultimately The Winter Soldier himself, Bucky Barnes, that is the highlight of this film. How did he survive the fall in the first Captain America movie? How is he still alive 70 years later? Why doesn’t he remember Steve? It was thrilling to watch this story unravel. Plus Samuel L Jackson kicks ass in that car chase scene. Just saying.

1. Avengers Assemble

I can still remember when we were building up to the first Avengers movie and there was so much hype – it was electrifying. Creating a movie where you bring so many characters together without neglecting anyone is not an easy task but Joss Whedon did it perfectly. Introducing the characters one by one was so much fun to watch and it’s even cool now to re-watch and see where it all began. The Avengers team has grown quite a lot since then so it’s also nice to go back to when the team was still relatively small. Avengers Assemble is popcorn brilliance with tons of action and humour. Every time they show it on TV, you can’t not watch it!
