As another Queen is told to sashay away, we are now well over halfway through the ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. With eight contestants now eliminated, we are down to the final six and mere weeks away from crowning the winner. Which remaining contestants are rising to the challenge and which are constantly floundering? Let’s take a look at the remaining six Queens standing and see who is most likely to make the final.
I’m a little embarrassed now to admit that I thought Alexis was the one to watch when the show started. I loved her promo image for the show, that yellow/green dress she wears is stunning. But Alexis is everything about a drag queen that I don’t like. She comes across as incredibly arrogant, very confident in her skills but is in fact mediocre in almost everything we’ve seen. All of her runways have been basic, her Liza in Snatch Game was done better by Jinkx Monsoon, only her performance as Kris Jenner stands out for me. But it’s her attitude that gets me. I feel like she loves to hear her own voice in Untucked and I feel like she lashes out at the other queens when the judges have critiqued her. It’s not their job to make sure you don’t look like shit Alexis. I’d like to see Alexis go next but I can seem them keeping her until the Top 5.
Nina Bonina Brown
Oh Nina. I was rooting for you. I was really rooting for you. But you’re making it so hard. Nina was in my top three in the initial episodes but she’s slowly fallen off my radar due to her own demons. Nina is an incredibly talented queen. Her makeup and creativity is absolutely flawless but her self doubt is holding her back from greatness. If she was able to truly let herself go then she would be unstoppable. Instead, it seems to me that she is making up non-existent problems in her head and building these walls. I expect Nina to be eliminated next and hopefully we’ll see a more confident Nina in Allstars 3.
Peppermint has been a revelation for me during this season. I initially wrote her off as a filler contestant early on but as the season has progressed, she has continued to improve and grow with each episode. I don’t think she deserved to win the RuPaul’s Roast episode as I thought Sasha was funnier but Peppermint has been one thing throughout this competition – kind. She’s easily the winner of Miss Congeniality this year. And her lip sync against Cynthia Lee Fontaine? Brilliant! The best performance of this season easily. I can’t see Peppermint making the final but I’m praying she makes top 4. She deserves it. I love to see a caring and kind person do so well.
Sasha Velour was another Queen that I wrote off as filler in the first episode. It took Sasha a little while to really get going but she’s found her lane, she’s found her momentum and she’s running with it. Her first win with Shea was when I started taking notice of her and every week since then, I’ve been looking forward to seeing what she’s going to do. I really like her style and her intelligent wit. She’s a different kind of comedian. My only concern is I think a little bit of self doubt could cause her to flounder. I hope not as I really would like to see Sasha in the final.
At this stage in the competition, the competition is Shea’s to win. Another Queen that yet again I thought was filler, Shea quickly proved me wrong. She’s been consistent throughout the competition and hasn’t shied away from any of the challenges. She’s also been one of the best on the runway with really fun outfits. I also really like that Shea calls Nina out when she needs to be. There’s no bullshitting with Shea. With 3 wins under her belt and 3 almost wins, Shea is in it to win it. And she’s got my support. #TeamShea.
I really got it wrong this season as I didn’t expect to like Trinity either! Trinity has been a revelation to me. A pageant girl who is talented, versatile and isn’t an asshole! Trinity has a great sense of wit and humour about her, offers varied runway looks and always tackles the challenges head on even if it doesn’t always work out. When she is good she is great but when she makes a mistake, it tends to be a bit of a mess. That being said, she absolutely deserves to be in the final three.
What do you think of the final six Queens? Who are you backing to win? Let me know in the comments below and as always, thanks for reading.
